Following the success of my safari-themed change table (check out Part 1 here!), I decided to complete the nursery set by giving two old IKEA side tables a matching makeover. These forgotten pieces from my mum's basement got a second life as coordinating nursery furniture.

The Starting Point

These basic IKEA side tables had been gathering dust in storage. While they had a basic design, they were structurally sound with sturdy legs and stable frames - making them perfect candidates for a makeover.

The Transformation

Step 1: Prep Work

Just like with the change table, everything started with sanding. Because these were made of much lower quality wood, I did more of a scuff sand with a lighter sanding paper just to ensure that the paint would stick.

Step 2: The Safari Treatment

I chose rich, natural colors to complement the change table: a warm walnut stain for the tops and a deep jungle green for the legs and drawers - same as the change table. After the stain dried, I applied a clear protective coating to the tops - a practical touch that ensures any water rings from midnight feeding mugs won't damage the finish. The earthy tones perfectly captured the safari theme while adding sophistication to the nursery.

I had full on baby brain at this point so I forgot to take photos.

Step 3: Final Details

To tie everything together, I added matching brass animal knobs that echo the ones used on the change table. These small details make the pieces look like they were always meant to be a set.

The Complete Safari Suite

Now our nursery has a cohesive look with the change table flanked by its matching side tables. The combination of walnut and jungle green creates a perfect backdrop for our safari-themed nursery.
